RADIOHEAD for HAITI multi-cam DVD release!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all!!
SO as some (many?) of you know, after the incredible gig Radiohead played last January to raise money for Haiti after that horrible earthquake, there has been a huge effort to create a multicam DVD to… - well, you can never ‘re-create’ this magical performance, especially given that only 1400 people got to attend it, so the recordings are scarce and precious. But one can at least try! So we (formengr, andrea and myself) tried to collect every frame out there to get the best coverage possible… and share it with all of you.
But remember - it was a SPECIAL show with a SPECIAL purpose – to raise badly needed funds for those who lived through the devastation. And it seemed only appropriate that the DVD should carry on some of these goals. So on the behalf of our little team of three, I contacted the band/management to tell them about our project and asked to name a charity of their choice - so that those downloading the DVD could donate some money to it – however much they can (‘cause we trust Radiohead’s choices don’t we?). We were thrilled to hear that Radiohead supported our efforts :-) and named Haiti to be the ‘beneficiary’ of such donations. They also chose Oxfam – who originally helped to organize the show – as the organization that would handle it. So I asked Oxfam if they could create a DEDICATED LINK for us, Radiohead fans, so in the end, we would know how much we have raised and let the band know too!.... I am quite ecstatic to tell you that it all happened!

Here we are –

Finally, Kii Arens – the author of the original ‘bandaid’ poster for the show - stepped forward to create artwork for our DVD! You see it on top of the post but the real hi-rez file is included in
the DVD (so don’t rip this blog :)) – thanks, Kii!!

Andrea made a very different alternative art

Enormous thanks to RADIOHEAD for EVERYTHING, Chris Hufford (Chris, you’re awesome!) and Bob Ferguson at Oxfam America (I owe you multiple drinks!) for making it fall into place (uhm - did I just say this?)
In this project, we have recordings from 14 video tapers, 4 audio tapers (everyone is listed in all art and all info files), more audio mixing by hoserama and an astounding amount of editing work by formengr (love you, form!) – I feel like we are all thanking each other, and it feels great! So THANKS again!!

UPDATE Jan 2012:
- a year after the release and 2 years after the earthquake:
as per Oxfam, our DVD has raised $23,690 in a total of 1236 gifts.... from 42 countries!! All of you who donated your footage and/or to raising money for Haiti - THANK YOU!!!!!!

  1. we as a project team were fortunate and pleased to gather approval and support from both Radiohead and the show's beneficiary Oxfam America’s Haiti Earthquake and Recovery Fund. on our combined behalf, we kindly request a donation to this fund for which Oxfam America has graciously supplied the following dedicated link (thanks Bob!):

    www.oxfamamerica.org/radiohead

along similar lines as In Rainbows, this is worth something to you. maybe it's only bandwidth, but hopefully more. you are on your honor.

many folks participated in the creation of this video. 18 individuals contributed audio and video media. one media source included an immense number contributing kindly to not only our own admittedly selfish cause (a recording), but also the show's (see here: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=287411). two more worked diligently gathering media, one of whom contributed as well. another put in a generous amount of time editing. Oxfam provided support as noted above and connected us to the original concert poster artist who created the DVD cover from the concert poster. last but foremost, there's Radiohead!

i set a deadline for myself to have this out today, Christmas Eve 2010. life and all it has to offer limits the time i can spend polishing this so the DVD is properly chaptered, has a credit roll at the end of disc 2, 4 different audio tracks, but is without menus. DVD version includes cover art too. In both HD & DVD versions all songs are included start to finish, but the in between moments are mostly blank. HD version has only one audio track and did not get the credit roll incorporated.

links are above. please use the torrents if you're able?

peace on earth, good will toward man.

  2. thank you all, I won't be downloading this because I live on state assistance, anf live 168% below poverty level. But I'll certainly pass it onto those fans and people who'd be mroe than happy to have this, and to help. My donations and time went out to Haiti LAST year, when I was in a position to help with my endless amounts of time and some US currency! Have a Happy Merry All! xo

  4. Great project, thanks. I donated a bit to Oxfam and am downloading now.

Just a suggestion - maybe offer a more manageable filesize for download, say, 700mb instead of 6gb? A stream on e.g. Vimeo may also be a good idea.

    Thanks again, good work!

    ReplyDelete
  5. well, we felt that bringing the best quality we have was a priority. This is for the crowd of 'purists' grabbing it on torrents where the DVD file size is pretty standard... Going with the assumption that whoever wants to convert it to a more compressed format - for iPod etc. can do it themselves. But I don't mind really - we can upload a 'light' version as well. Perhaps in a couple of days when there is less people hanging on torrents and need us seed the DVD. And we'll stream it. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. The Zomb tracker is closed - it has reached user limit. Hopefully this will soon be lifted.

    ReplyDelete
  7. oh! wow - I didn't know there WAS a limit. Perhaps you can download some of the DVD files using MUL links and the 'roll them over' to a torrent to complete the download? we chose zomb over other trackers in part because it is running ratio-free for all downloaders till January.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thank you so much for this. One question: On your megaupload links, the file names are the same on disc 1 and disc 2 (all starting with "vts_02" instead of, I would think, the disc 1 ones starting with "vts_01"). Is this correct? Are they still different files or have you inadvertantly posted disc 2 twice?

    ReplyDelete
  9. files names ARE the same - standard DVD files names. I suggest collecting all for disc 1, creating a disc1 folder with video_ts subfolder and putting all of them in. Then doing exact same thing with disc2.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Got it. Glad I asked. Thanks for the quick response, and thanks again for the whole shebang.

    ReplyDelete
  11. a lower rez, ipod sized as requested, can be found here:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ANEAT6TJ

    ReplyDelete
  12. not sure what you mean, Mike. There is still lots and lots of people on zomb and all MUL links are functional.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wonderfull job but it's a nightmare downloading from MUL and Zomb send an error when registering : "Sorry, user limit reached. Please try again later."
Would it be possible to have another torrent link ?
    Thanks a lot !

    ReplyDelete
  14. ok, so we might be able to seed it on another tracker. It's odd, you know, my personal preference is actually downloading from MUL links. I grabbed a little piece of freeware called Jdownloader http://jdownloader.org/ load up a set of links there - and just let it work it's job through - completely hands-off. There are other download managers that all basically do the same thing.
With respect to another torrent - I will post a note on our progress in that direction.

    ReplyDelete
  15. great job, but please post the torrent in another tracker, it's impossible to register at Zomb. Try http://www.kickasstorrents.com/, or http://hexagon.cc/, those two are open and run very well.
I also tried the megaupload files and it's a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  16. well I just created an account in kickasstorrents - I am still searching for the url for the annouce for their tracker.

    ReplyDelete
  17. that's great. try this one: tracker.publicbt.com:80

right now I have a torrent running there and it's using that url.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ok I have no idea about this tracker - I put a whole bunch of annouce files as they suggested - can you see if this is working at all? it looks a bit odd http://www.kickasstorrents.com/radiohead-2010-01-24-the-music-box-the-fonda-los-angeles-ca-us-2x-multicam-dvd-ntsc-t4888978.html

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, it's working like a charm!
    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  20. ok folks, anyone who has already collected the DVD, if you could help me seed it at http://www.kickasstorrents.com/radiohead-2010-01-24-the-music-box-the-fonda-los-angeles-ca-us-2x-multicam-dvd-ntsc-t4888978.html - I'll much appreciate it - my seeding ability is limited. Help and stay on if you are able - it's getting kinda crowded there!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seeding there now. I upped over 700GB on Zomb, now I can help at kickass torrents also with my 100Mb/s connection.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Can anybody tell me how to burn this to DVD? I tried iDVD and it won't recognize any of the file types. I burned it right to DVD and my player doesn't read it as a DVD but rather as a data disc.

    ReplyDelete
  23. DVD Burner for Mac 1.5.3 can burn these files I would think. I don't see that iDVD can. I'm not a Mac guy, but hope this helps. I use Nero...not sure if they have a version of that for Macs. Good luck

    ReplyDelete
  24. I use DVD2oneX2 http://www.dvd2one.com/ - they have 30 day free trial period, I don't remember how much it is if you want to buy it afterwards. It is VERY straightforward. Just make sure that for each disc you create a Disc1(2) folder with VIDEO_TS subfolder and all files in it; you then point the program to video_ts subfolder and it goes through the routine. There must be other burners out there, but I like this one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Does anyone know if you can simply combine the two VIDEO_TS folders and burn this to one single Dual-Layer DVD? I'd rather have it on disc, instead of separating it and having to switch discs half-way through. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Any one know where I can get just the audio? The video is cool, but I would prefer to just listen to it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. the three sources were circulated earlier - I have megaupload links for two of them - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8BP9F8PW (Edgar) and http://www.megaupload.com/?d=543EJ1TE (funkeymunky). The fourth source torrent link on dime and zomb are above and are seeded well.

    ReplyDelete
  28. hello everybody and thank you so much for your effort! It is just incredible, I think RH are proud of you :)
I have a problem with HD 1280x720 mp4 downloaded from MUL. By extracting part 1 WinRAR says the file is corrupt. I tried to re-download the part but had the same result (
Could someone help me with this please?

    ReplyDelete
  29. hi - you know, you cannot extract AN ISOLATED file - you need to download ALL 6 before extracting - then the whole movie comes out in one piece. Because it IS a single 5+GB mp4 file. (I probably need to make a clarifying note in the blog...)

    ReplyDelete
  30. surely I know it))) I downloaded all the parts, and by extracting there was that error in the 1st part..

    ReplyDelete
  31. very odd, noone mentioned anything of the sort before - and I actually reconstituted a complete file from these same 6 bits. If you do have all six sitting in the sameplace and you start with number one, it should pull them out. I would also suspect it will give you an error stating that is is part1 irrespective of which one of them is incomplete - because it is only one big file (+info +md5 - did these come out ok?)
you know I can do a test run and re-download the first one a re-extract.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ok - so I just re-downloaded part1 from the link above and extracted together with pre-existing other 5 - worked like a charm. Please check if each download was complete - they should all show the same size (~906MB - or 950MB is you are running MacOS Snow Leopard) except for the last one, which is smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  33. IR, I really sorry for having bothered you, but I've just been given an alternate torrent link for this (I don't have an account on ZOMB), so I don't need MUL anymore.. If no one else experienced this problem.. well, you can forget it :)
Thank you for answering me so kindly, though :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. no problem :-) hope you like it! We uploaded the DVD on kickasstorrents.... now, that the seeding rush is over, I could probably put the mp4 there as well. Unless, as you are saying someone else did already :-) which tracker did you see it on?
Also it IS seeded like crazy on zomb, they stopped giving out new accounts for a bit but it seems that they are back at it (confirmation email frequently ends up in a spam folder though)
I am all for distribution as long as the info and link to Oxfam Haiti donations site stays with it :-)

  36. @Ramses - I take it, problem solved? I am downloading part4 just to check it - I am 600MB in, so I don't anticipate any issues.....

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey! One of the links are broken. The HD, part 5, can you fix it??

    I would be very grateful.

    ReplyDelete
  38. the mp4 from megaupload gives some nonsense about the file being removed for violation of terms and services on parts 4 and 5, nice. Glad Oxfam is a decent charity at least since the donation seems to have been just that...

    ReplyDelete
  39. that's such crap and as you say, nonsense, hate this! I just downloaded number 4 earlier today because someone was getting stuck in the middle! OK - my bandwidth here is crap, but I will start number 5 re-up now. And do 4 tomorrow. But in the meantime - can you jump on ZOMB? there's 50+ seeders there! Sorry - and thanks a ton for donating.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ok, the re-up of part 5 is ongoing - will take 3.5 hrs. so the link will be up here (first just in comments) either real late tonight (after 1AM EST) or first thing tomorrow AM. #4 to follow. thx for your patience - this was NOT a part of the plan!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh boy... can Father Christmas still deliver some stuff ? Like many, I still have to download some parts. For us it's p3 & p4 od DVD disc 2.

  62. Hey there -- thanks for the amazing hard work on this. I don't suppose you'd be willing to talk to BBC 6 Music about how the project came together? We'd love to give the project a mention on air.

  68. Hi All-

Bob from Oxfam America here. Just wanted to publicly thank Inez, formengr, and everyone else who helped create such an amazing document of what has become an iconic concert. I'd also like to thank everyone who has donated much-needed funds for Oxfam's work in Haiti. Please know that every penny is being spent wisely, and as the one-year anniversary of the earthquake arrives in a few days, this project is helping to make sure that the plight in Haiti is not forgotten.

If you'd like more information on Oxfam's work in Haiti, I invite you to visit www.oxfamamerica.org/haiti .

  70. HI guys! So after much thought, formengr and I decided that despite all other means of distribution, we should also upload the HD mp4 movie to an open tracker - just like the DVD. So I am asking THOSE WHO DOWNLOADED this MP4 movie already and are torrent-friendly - would you please come HELP US SEED IT here: http://www.kickasstorrents.com/radiohead-2010-01-24-the-music-box-the-fonda-los-angeles-ca-us-2x-multicam-hd-1280x720-mp4-t5026574.html

  77. Firstly, many many thanks for putting together such a visceral document of a classic concert for such a good cause. Very happy to donate.

Secondly I was faced with a login screen when I went to the "open" kickass torrents link ... so I got downloaded from here:
    http://btjunkie.org/torrent/Radiohead-2010-01-24-Radiohead-For-Haiti-HD-1280x720/4358f0ba8939c62250631e4964a40ad4b2680484ed6e

Lastly, this initiative got mentioned on the BBC News website today so expect some more limey traffic!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hi Daniel - thanks so much for your comments!
Wow - not sure about log-in screen.... there are almost 300 people downloading on KAT right now... I didn't need a log-in screen there; but their site is a bit weird. I'm happy that you found another one! I think they actually cross-announce. I'm sure that both DVD and MP4 would be popping up on other trackers over time, we just couldn't possibly seed it everywhere :-)
And MANY MANY thanks for donating!

  85. Absolutely amazing job, congrats to everyone involved for making this and generating even more money for a great cause. Must have been awesome to get a mention from the band ;)

Would it be possible to upload the audio-only file onto Megaupload (or any file hosting site)? Sorry for being so adverse to torrents lol. Hope it isn't too much trouble, and if not that's totally fine.

  86. just the new one, right? The main track? Cause the three earlier have been circulated for - well, for a year. Coincidentally I have MUL links for 2 of those three -

  93. ha ha - well, it makes my life easier in some ways - but it's not great considering a larger picture.... I wish everyone who thought it was great could put a little post somewhere in their own blogs/pages etc. Our last number from Oxfam was 6 days ago - $17,815 from 42 countries. It's AWESOME, but it could still keep going for a bit.... It's funny, press people - those who missed it - they wish they featured it, but they can't do it now because it looks obvious that they had in fact missed it. How's that for ethics? missing the whole point.... ;-)

  94. The .md5 checksums in this torrent can't be placed on DVDs. How do I put this on a DVD then?

    ReplyDelete
  95. I am not sure I understand the question. md5 checksums are included with both the DVD - 1 for each disc - and for an mp4. md5s are not needed for burning DVDs (meaning burning them AS A DVD, as opposed to a file set), much like the text file or the art. They are support files to check the integrity of the download. So... maybe you can define 'put' and 'this'?

  96. I'm really disappointed that I didn't get any responses from my post on tumblr considering most of my followers are RH maniacs. This tells me that many so called RH fans on tumblr didn't really care about the cause. What you said about the media covering the story, perhaps they didn't want to report a story about bootlegged material in connection with RH and Oxfam, even though the band was involved in the making of it. I wonder if the media has policies regarding this. I'm seriously doubtful that the media wasn't aware the dvd was in the works.

    ReplyDelete
  97. well, the media WAS covering it even before the DAS. Spin, LA Times, Consequence of sound, those french papers, RTT news, BBC6 and after the DAS there was the second bomb-like effect with Pitchfork, stereogum, Rolling Stone BR, Independent, The Guardian - so it was more than I ever anticipated. There's a bunch of non-english-language papers as well that I keep seeing referrals from. From Portual, Spain, Italy, Argentina... A couple of radio stations too. I think it is perfectly fair to say that those who did not run a post on time, won't do it when it's too late as it is no longer news. But don't be upset about the tumblr thing.... - actually - I think I saw a couple of referrals from there - could be your friends!
Oh you know what's cute? Someone edited the WIKI radiohead page to add this - so we have some referrals from wikipedia :)
We have a new total as of Friday morning: $18,648 :-)

  103. Thank you for your generosity and all your hard work.
Downloaded the iPod version and it's beautiful!
Will try for the DVD files so I can actually watch this on my TV.
Made a donation to Oxfam as well.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Many thanks for donations and thanks for your kind words! DVD should work like a charm, just make sure complete the first set of files for disc 1 - create a Video_TS folder under disc 1 - and then do the same for disc 2, to avoid confusion. It should look something like this for burning: http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/1599/rh4h2xdvdfolderstructur.png

  110. Hey Inez,

I'm glad I stumbled this . Posted on FB. I thought I was on the OXFAM RH donation site when it came out and donated a bit from Carol and me. But you know how 'scatter brained ' I am. I just made a ten buck contriution for a good cause lol

But that small gift (knowing our situation) has brought more to us that can never be re-paid.

Thanks for the help for the Haitian people and your quiet help for lots of RH fans.
